Qantas has announced that it will commence using the Next Generation Check-in system at its domestic terminal at Sydney Airport from November 10 following its successful trial at its terminal in Perth.
The Next Generation Check-in will allow passengers at Sydney’s Terminal 3 holding specialised radio frequency ID (RFID) cards to check in by touching a specilaised Q Card reader, while those with RFID Q Bag Tags will be able to drop their bags straight onto the conveyor belt at the auto bag drops. Qantas says the process has been designed to cut down check-in times dramatically.

Qantas is currently in the process of rolling out the Q Cards and Q Bag Tags to Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers. Next Generation Check-in will progressively rolled out at Qantas’s domestic terminals in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra over the next year with the program scheduled to be completed by the second half of 2011.
