International passenger numbers into and out of Australia grew by 10.8 per cent in September compared to September 2009, new figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) show, a continuation of the strong growth trend of recent months.
In total 2.313 million passengers flew in and out of Australia on scheduled services in September, with airlines operating 2.942 million seats, resulting in a 79.3 per cent load factor for the month.

Qantas’s share of international traffic declined by 1.0 per cent for the month to 19.2 per cent. Other carriers to experience decreased marketshare for the month include Jetstar (down 0.3 per cent to 8.2 per cent) and Singapore Airlines (down 1.1 percentage points to 9.0 per cent), while Emirates’ marketshare increased (up 1.1 points to 8.7 per cent). Air New Zealand’s 8.0 per cent marketshare remained static.
The share of international traffic operated by all Australian designated airlines increased from 33.3 per cent to 33.9 per cent. Low cost carrier marketshare increased from 18.3 per cent in September 2009 to 19.2 per cent.
International freight increased by 15.1 per cent over September 2009 to 68,800 tonnes – inbound freight surged by 25 per cent whereas outbound freight grew by just 1.1 per cent in the month.
