• Prime Minister Howard tabled a White Paper in Parliament on December 6 outlining a defence spending increase of $23. 5 billion over 10 years. Among the measures will be the provision of funds for up to 100 new combat aircraft to replace the 71 F/A- 18s which will reach the end of their service life between 2012- 2015. The F-111 replacement issue is also likely to be included in these plans.
