Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) staff are set to raise almost $100,000 after voluntarily donating a day of their annual leave to the Premier’s Flood Appeal.

The move comes after BAC itself made a $250,000 donation to the appeal, with the airport urging companies to follow the lead of Alliance Airlines staff which will also donate a day of leave to the victims of Queensland’s devastating floods. While organising its own flood appeal, Alliance may also match dollar for dollar any amount raised by its staff, but a company spokeswoman said that would still need to be decided by the board.

BAC CEO and managing director Julieanne Alroe said there had been an overwhelming staff response to the idea, which was spreading across the airport’s workforce of more than 300 businesses. “The devastating floods of last week have affected tens of thousands of people, including airport staff themselves. As a leading Australian institution and the gateway to this great state, Brisbane Airport is determined to help get Queensland back on its feet,” Alroe said.

“With 17,000 people working at Brisbane Airport, it is encouraging to think just how much could be raised for flood victims. Even if only half the airport workforce opted into this fundraising event, we could raise up to $3 million dollars.”
