Brazil’s TAM Airlines has become the Latin American launch customer for the Airbus A320neo, while it has also signed on for two additional Boeing 777-300ERs.
According to Airbus, TAM has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 22 A320neos and 10 other A320 Family aircraft. Engine selection, which is between the CFM LEAP-X or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G, will be announced at a later date.

The A320neo was launched in January, with Virgin America signing on as the first customer, while India’s IndiGo has also signed an MOU for the re-engined aircraft. Airbus says that the combination of new generation engines, ‘sharklet’ wingtip devices and other aerodynamic enhancements will give the NEO an up to 15 per cent fuel burn advantage over the current A320.
Meanwhile, the carrier has also ordered two and taken two purchase rights on Boeing 777-300ERs, bringing its total firm orders for the type to 12. TAM took delivery of its first 777 in August 2008.
