• Lockheed Martin received a US$1. 12 billion contract on December 5 to commence the system development and demonstration (SDD) phase of the USAF C-5A/B Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (REAP). The changes, which will enable the fleet to continue in service until 2040, include new General Electric CF6-80C2L1F engines on new pylons, nacelles and thrust reversers, together with structural improvements. Four C-5s will be initially upgraded to the new standard with a first flight projected for late 2005 prior to the award of a production contract.
