Tiger Airways has announced plans to resume flights to Cairns pending approval by safety regulators.

The budget carrier was forced to sharply curtail operations following a six week suspension over safety concerns last year and remains under a CASA imposed cap on daily flights. It has focused on core routes out of its Melbourne hub since returning to the air.

In a statement, Tiger said it planned to re-commence daily service to Cairns from April 25, with flights leaving Melbourne at 8:50 am and returning at 12:45 pm. Fares start from $99.

The airline said it is “keen to reinstate flights to a number of other destinations around Australia.” Executives have said the carrier must increase flights in order to break even after bleeding money through the second half of last year.
