Lufthansa has taken delivery of the first Boeing 747-8I Intercontinental for passenger operations, with the German airline’s first of 20 updated 747s handed over at Boeing’s Everett plant on April 25.

After its own preparations Lufthansa plans to fly the 747-8I to Frankfurt on May 1 ahead of a welcome ceremony for the aircraft there on May 2.

“Lufthansa and Boeing have a long and proud history of working together to bring new innovations to the airline industry,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are grateful for Lufthansa’s inspiration and leadership in helping us design a new Queen of the Skies for the 21st Century, and I’m proud of what Boeing employees have accomplished by bringing this great aircraft to Lufthansa and the world.”

Lufthansa will be the first airline to place the 747-8I into passenger service, but the first 747-8I delivery, for an undisclosed VIP customer believed to be the government of Qatar, took place earlier this year.

Boeing holds orders for 36 747-8Is.
