Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says Gold Coast Airport must do a better job communicating with the public.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has approved Gold Coast Airport’s 20-year Master Plan but says the airport must do a better job communicating with the public about aircraft noise and other issues.

“I expect to see genuine engagement with the community as Gold Coast Airport develops in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games,” Albanese said in a statement announcing the approval on Wednesday.

The master plan is the first to be approved under more stringent government planning guidelines that require a ground transport plan, detailed information on near-term development and an environmental strategy.

Gold Coast Airport estimates that it will create nearly 2500 full-time jobs over the next 20 years while contributing $768 million to the economy and welcoming some 5.5 million visitors to the region.

Albanese said the Airport had committed to engaging with the community through an established Community Aviaiton Consultation Group and in other forums, and said he was “aware of the community’s concerns about environmental issues.”

“I have made it clear that the airport must ensure appropriate management” of endangered species, he said.
