The federal government has announced funding to assist 18 regional airports to upgrade security arrangements as a result of new regulations taking effect on July 1.
The latest funding comes on top of $32 million provided for the purchase of security screening equipment, as well as $9 million towards training security staff to use new screening technologies.

“The $4.9 million being announced today will go towards minor modifications of passenger terminal facilities including the installation of passenger walkways, glass panels and check points,” said Transport Minister Anthony Albanese.
The funding is contingent on a dollar for dollar matching by the airport operator’s contribution, with funding amounts of $100,000 to $460,000.
Airports receiving the funding include Horn Island, Devonport, Tamworth and Busselton.
From July 1 all airports receiving aircraft with over 20 tonnes maximum takeoff weight will be required to commence passenger and checked baggage security screening.
