More regional airports are now operating passenger and checked baggage security screening after new regulations came into effect on July 1.. (Mehdi Nazarinia)

New regulations came into force on July 1, extending security screening to more regional airports in a move which the federal government says will make regional air travel safer.

Under the new ‘Strengthening Aviation Security Initiative’, which was part of the government’s Aviation White Paper, regional airports serviced by aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 20,000kg or more (such as Bombardier Q400s – pictured – and the ATR 72) are now required to commence passenger and checked baggage screening.

“Australia leads the world when it comes to aviation safety and security and we are always reviewing our security and safety systems to ensure that they remain the world’s best,” said Transport Minister Anthony Albanese.

“These new measures will make our skies even safer for passengers flying throughout regional Australia.”

The change in regulations has seen 21 regional airports around the country, including Horn Island, Olympic Dam, Tamworth and Busselton now operating security screening.
