The increase in economy baggage allowance makes Etihad/Virgin competitive with Emirates. (Gordon Reid)

Strategic partners Etihad and Virgin Australia have increased the baggage allowance for economy class passengers to 30kg.  The new allowances are applicable on flights between Australia, Abu Dhabi and other destinations where the airlines partner excluding North America.

Virgin Australia’s chief customer officer, Mark Hassell, said: “The extra seven kilograms is a significant increase for our economy customers travelling from Australia to Abu Dhabi. We are always looking for ways to enhance the travel experience and believe this will make a huge difference to our customers travelling on this route. Aligning with our partner, Etihad Airways, allows us to deliver a seamless experience and more convenience to those using our combined network.”

Members of the airlines’ frequent flyer programs will be eligible for additional allowances depending on their status.

In March 2012, Etihad Airways and Virgin Australia increased the baggage allowance for premium passengers to 40kg for business class and 50kg for first class.

The new allowances now match those of Emirates. Qantas economy class allowances vary according to flight number and frequent flyer status from 23kg on most international services to two pieces on trans-Pacific sectors.
