Boeing announced on March 12 it had resumed the development of the ultra long-range Boeing 777-200LR, which will have a range of 16,983km. Powered by GE90-115B engines, this fifth version in the 777 family was initially launched with an order for three aircraft from EVA Air of Taiwan on June 27 2001. Boeing announced the deferment of development for 18 months on October 15 when only 10 per cent of the design work had been completed.

Trials have concluded of a Rhode Island Air National Guard C-130J Hercules undertaking operations from an austere dirt landing strip at the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. Lockheed Martin conducted the tests to demonstrate that a stretched Hercules can safely land and takeoff from very short, unprepared runways. A US$4. 05 billion contract let on March 14 for the supply of 40 stretched CC-130Js for the USAF and 20 KC-130Js for the USMC takes worldwide orders of the C-130J to 178.
