Melbourne has moved a step closer to a second international airport with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Australia and the Philippines securing the rights for international flights to Avalon.
The MoU will allow Australian and Philippine carriers to operate a direct daily service between the Philippines and Avalon Airport.

“An international airport for Avalon has been on the community’s wish list as far back as 1997. It was a key election commitment of this Federal Labor Government and I look forward to seeing the first international flight touch down at Avalon Airport,” Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said.
“This is a huge win for trade and tourism and for Geelong and Victoria. A second international airport will bring more visitors, jobs and economic growth to the region.”
In October last year, Minister for Defence Stephen Smith gave final approval for changes to Avalon’s lease arrangement allowing it to construct a purpose-built international terminal.

says:Meanwhile people are saying Sydney does not need a second airport and that Sydney Airport should expand it’s operations and remove the curfew. *sigh*
