Inflight refuelling when and where you need it
The fine art of air-to-air refuelling was developed in the period immediately following WW2 as tensions rose between the western allies and the Soviet-led eastern bloc.
But the ability to refuel inflight is not restricted to the superpowers, with second and third tier militaries adopting the capability in recent decades as they seek to bolster their air combat forces. Nations such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, and others have employed various versions of the KC-135/707 family, as well as more diverse types such as the C-130, Airbus A310, DC-10 and, more recently the Boeing 767 and Airbus A330.
