Wyong Shire Council has this week taken a step closer to establishing a new regional airport on the NSW Central Coast, with state and federal government support gathering for the project as staff of the council begin preparing required studies.

With the new airport expected to generate $250 million annually in regional economic value, local identity and businessman John Singleton said he is “100 per cent supportive of an airport for the Central Coast as critical to boosting the entire area”.

“It would open up so many opportunities for business, job creation, tourism not to mention the major financial injection it would have for the whole community,” Singleton said. “It’s a piece of vital infrastructure the coast needs and deserves.”

The airport is planned to accommodate regional carriers with a runway of approximately 2,600m and be built through public private partnerships to be operational by 2020.

Wyong Shire mayor Doug Eaton said it is expected to inject $250 million annually into the regional economy once it is fully operational.

The council is now undertaking environmental, geotechnical, noise and economic studies, which will contribute to a masterplan and planning proposal for the airport.

“There is still a lot of work to do and we will continue to consult with landowners, the community and state and federal governments through each step of the process,” Eaton said.  “The masterplan will also be exhibited for public comment.”
