RAAF C-17 provides South Sudan airlift support

A RAAF 36SQN c-17 Globemaster is operating a number flights into South Sudan in support of the United Nations mission there following attacks on the civilian population and UN workers in the strike torn African nation.

C-17A A41-208 landed at the South Sudan capital of Juba on January 3 carrying aid equipment and supplies, flying in from Brindisi, Italy via Djibouti.

“It consists of three containers of tents, water purification and sanitation vital for displaced people within South Sudan,” aircraft captain FLTLT Luke Ridgeway said of the aircraft’s load.

“In Italy we’ve had a large amount of support from the United Nations and the local Italian military. In conjunction with the base command and the UN we prepared the aircraft and have now delivered the much needed cargo.”

Defence says further C-17 flights in support of United Nations Mission in South Sudan are planned over coming days, while the Australian government has also made available one of the two C-130J Hercules currently based at Al Minhad, UAE should it be required.
