High intensity and strobe lighting installed at both ends of the runway, in conjunction with Airservices’ recent upgrade of the runway’s instrument landing system (ILS), means 34L/16R is now rated for Category II operations, allowing approved aircraft to operate to a minimum decision height (DH) of 100ft and a runway visual range (RVR) of 350m as opposed to the previous RVR limits of 550 to 1,500 metres.

“We’ve made a multi-million dollar investment in works to enhance operations for low visibility conditions such as fog and poor weather,” Airport CEO Kerrie Mather said. “Our new runway lighting system will enable more aircraft to land safely at Sydney Airport in adverse weather conditions, instead of being diverted to other Australian cities.”
