Adelaide Airport has posted a hefty increase in international passengers over the past year as airlines added new services to overseas destination, handling 908,000 international passengers in the 12 months to June 30 2014, up 25.5 per cent from the prior corresponding period.

Adelaide Airport managing director Mark Young said it was the third consecutive year of double-digit international passenger growth, noting Adelaide currently had 53 international flights per week, up from 33 three years ago.

“Our consistent growth has caught the attention of international carriers and resulted in a substantial improvement in the availability of direct services out of Adelaide,” Young said in a statement on Thursday.

Some of the new international flights introduced in the past 12 months included AirAsia X adding direct flights to Kuala Lumpur and Jetstar starting Adelaide-Auckland flights. However, Jetstar is ending the service from August 23.

On the domestic front, Adelaide handled 6.2 million passengers, an increase of 3.5 per cent from a year ago, while regional passengers fell 4.7 per cent to 575,000 due to less mining-related traffic, Young said.

Double digit growth without the Spirit of Australia? Why has our national carrier no services from Adelaide?
