Qantas has forged a new codeshare agreement with Canadian carrier WestJet for flights from Honolulu and Los Angeles as well as services within Canada.

Starting from October 15, Qantas will place its QF code on WestJet-operated services from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, as well as from Honolulu to Vancouver. These WestJet flights will all depart within four hours of the Flying Kangaroo’s services from Australia, Qantas said on Thursday.

Qantas will also place its airline code on Westjet flights from Calgary to nine destinations across Canada, from Vancouver to seven cities in Canada and from Toronto to Ottawa and Montreal.

There were about 20 new routes as part of the new codeshare agreement.

“This new codeshare delivers on our gateway strategy of operating to key global hubs and providing customers with access to an expanded network with airline partners based in those ports,” Qantas executive manager of international sales Stephen Thompson said in a statement on Thursday.

The latest codeshare agreement with WestJet adds to existing codeshare services to Canada with oneworld partner American Airlines and the non-aligned Alaska Airlines.

Qantas announced recently it would retime some flights to the US and add three extra services a week from Melbourne to Los Angeles from early 2015.

Former Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey has been a director on the WestJet board since 2006.
