The 2,000th engine delivered was for the popular 777-300ER variant.

GE Aviation general manager of the GE90/9X program Bill Millhaem said the GE90 engine and Boeing 777 helped “revolutionise the twin-engine aircraft concept in commercial aviation”, given twin-engine aircraft were previously not regarded as a viable option for long-haul travel.

“Yet the proven performance and reliability of the GE90-powered Boeing 777 aircraft altered this mindset and made the engine-aircraft combination among the most successful long-range, widebody offering in service today,” Millhaem said in a statement.

GE Aviation’s was currently working on Ge9X engines for Boeing’s updated 777X, with first flight expected some time in 2019.

“Technology maturation testing on key components for the GE9X will continue next year with the first engine scheduled to test in 2016,” GE Aviation said.

The GE 90-115B – what an engine! And pretty impressive for plane-watchers listening to it powering up.
Unfortunately for the thrill-seeker, newer engines are quieter and not so powerful. Oh well………
