The Federal Government approved Canberra Airport’s 2014 Master Plan and given its support of international flights to the nation’s capital.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss says the document sets out the airport’s planned upgrades to aircraft taxiways, parking aprons and transport facilities over the next 20 years, as well as the potential start of international services to the city.

“Canberra Airport boasts the nation’s newest passenger terminal and the commencement of international flights as outlined in the 2014 Master Plan will be an important step in promoting the Canberra region as a jewel in the nation’s tourism crown,” Truss said in a statement on January 22.

Canberra Airport opened its new passenger terminal in March 2013, which includes facilities to process international passengers. The ACT government was keen to attract more flights to Canberra and has set aside $1.1 million in a Cooperative Airline Stimulus Fund to secure international services as well as more domestic flights, including from low-cost carriers, to the city.

The airport has 50 days to publicly release its Master Plan.
