RAAF maritime surveillance and ISR on the cusp of generation change

It is now a little over a year since the Australian government committed itself to purchase eight Boeing P-8A Poseidons to meet a requirement for a Maritime Patrol and Response Aircraft capability to replace the AP‑3C Orion.

In August 2014, the US Navy awarded Boeing Defense, Space and Security Systems an Advanced Acquisition Contract of $295. 6 million to commence procurement of 12 Full Rate Production (FRP) Lot 2, Increment 2 P-8As, with a third of this tranche earmarked for Australia.
