The AAA said in a statement on Thursday Goodwin, who is general manager of operations at Brisbane Airport, has decided not to stand for re-election when his current term expired. He will remain on the board as immediate past chairman.

The industry group representing the nation’s airports said nominations for a new chairman would open on Friday.

AAA deputy chairman Guy Thompson said Goodwin had made a significant contribution as AAA chairman, noting the growth in staff at the association, increase in corporate membership and the broader range of services the association now offered to the airports industry.

“Under Stephen’s leadership the AAA now has a clear strategic plan and vision for the future, has grown its engagement with government, and cemented its reputation as the voice of the airport industry,” Goodwin said in a statement.

“We also thank Julieanne Alroe and the team at Brisbane Airport for their support of Stephen in his work with the AAA at the same time that he has also been carrying out his the role of General Manager Operations at one of Australia’s major international airports.”

The AAA will elect a new chairman at its annual general meeting in Hobart on October 14.

Goodwin said the AAA had “incredible strength and trust from its many stakeholders, particularly with all levels of government”.

“Our views are sought out regularly on the important issues facing our industry,” Goodwin said.

“The AAA also has the strong support of its members in terms of support for the AAA’s strategic direction and the range of initiatives being worked on to strengthen and enhance the sustainability of all of its airport members.”
