The contract is the latest step in the development of the new air traffic management system, which aims to combine Australia’s separate civil and military air traffic management systems into one program.

Parts of the Onesky system were expected to be operating by 2018, with the full rollout due to be completed in 2021.

Airservices acting chief executive Jason Harfield said the contract would support design activities for the system’s software.

“This is the fourth Advanced Work Order under the agreement signed with Thales to progress the delivery of Australia’s civil-military air traffic system,” Harfield said in a statement on Thursday.

Airservices said the “advanced work orders” were taking place in parallel with the acquisition and support contract negotiations.

Thales signed a “forward services contract” with the Airservices at the Avalon Airshow in February 2015, after the company was chosen as the successful supplier to start work on the system.
