Fresh from its launch of flights to Canberra and Wellington, Singapore Airlines (SIA) is further expanding its footprint in Australia with a new three times weekly service linking Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.
The new flight, which will operate on a Singapore-Jakarta-Sydney routing, will launch on November 23, with SIA able to sell tickets for the fifth-freedom Sydney-Jakarta sector.

“Australia and Indonesia are two of Singapore Airlines’ most popular routes in our global network,” SIA regional vice president for South West Pacific Tan Tiow Ko said.
“We are pleased to increase the choices our customers have when it comes to flying from Sydney to Singapore and now Sydney to Jakarta.”
The route will be operated by Boeing 777-200ER equipment featuring 26 business class seats that offer direct aisle access for every passenger and 245 economy class seats, SIA said in a statement on Wednesday.
Once the new service takes off, SIA will have a total of 34 weekly flights between Singapore and Sydney and 74 weekly flights a week between Singapore and Jakarta.
SIA said alliance partner Virgin Australia would codeshare on the new route. Australia’s competition regulator recently approved the pair’s alliance until 2020.
The Sydney-Jakarta route is currently served by Qantas and Garuda Indonesia.
Sydney Airport noted the number of passengers travelling between Indonesia and Sydney grew 13 per cent to 620,000 during the past year.
“This service will also further support the $10 billion in annual investment flows between Australia and Indonesia, and strengthen the economic ties and trade links between our two countries,” Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather said in a statement.

says:It seems to me they’re trying to copy and challenge the overwhelming footprint Emirates are establishing. Hopefully this fuels lower ticket prices to Asia and Europe.

says:I recall flying on a Qantas 747SP Sydney Jakarta Singapore in 2001. Good that SIA are fighting back against the Middle East hubs. Qantas must question why they abandoned Singapore for the fog bound overcrowded Emirates dominated Dubai. Opportunities lost by Qantas are being hidden by the bonus of low fuel cost driven profits. Now Qantas are struggling to get back into Singapore and the growth Asian routes.

says:Excited for this. Live in Jakarta, and GA basically holds a monopoly on AU routes out of CGK. Not that there’s much: CGK-SYD, MEL and PER, but they sure do charge like they do. QF, instead of using this op to lower its prices and get ahead, plays along and keeps its own prices very high.
Not that SQ is a budget player by any means, but it will force GA and QF to lower its prices as its a much more respected airline here in ID. Also, I’m hoping it will make QF run the opposite route just out of spite, so we’ll have another player in the CGK-SIN market.

says:@Tony The move to partner with Emirates was to provide Qantas with more one stop options for customers which wasn’t part of the Europe route through Singapore and Bangkok. Apart for a couple of code shares with Cathay, most customers had to fly to London and then change to BA to fly to other destinations on the continent.
The aircraft flying through Singapore and Bangkok mostly had customers flying on to London, not necessarily stopping in Asia. The change has actually increased the number of seats Qantas offers to Asia because it is no longer basically a refueling stop for the London leg.
