Japanese flag carrier ANA is offering one talented artist or designer the chance to have their work displayed on the fuselage of its Airbus A380s.

The Star Alliance member is taking the first of three A380s on order from early 2019, which will be used on the Tokyo-Honolulu route, and is seeking public input for designing the aircraft livery.

“To commemorate the deployment of these three new aircraft, ANA is inviting both pro and aspiring amateur artists to submit designs that will get people excited about visiting the tropical island paradise,” ANA said in a statement.

“The grand prize winner will receive a pair of round trip tickets in economy class between Tokyo and Honolulu, while runners up will receive original ANA souvenirs.”

The competition opens on October 7 and closes November 30. The winner will be announced in February 2017. More details are available on the ANA competition website.

ANA confirmed an order for the three A380s, which will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900s, in January.

“The A380 allows us to efficiently expand seating capacity at a lower cost per seat while offering a flexible range of cabin classes,” ANA said on January 29.

ANA will be the first Japanese operator of the A380. Japan’s Skymark Airlines had ordered six A380s, but Airbus terminated Skymark’s order in 2014. The airline later filed for bankruptcy in May 2015.

Two A380s that were slated for delivery to Skymark have already been built and sit in storage at Airbus’s facility in Toulouse. These aircraft were being re-marketed and won’t be going to ANA.

Among current A380 operators, Malaysia Airlines chose a special livery for its fleet of six aircraft, while Singapore Airlines and Emirates have used the type to highlight special events or charitable causes.

A round trip in economy on one of these things is not a prize; it’s a punishment. Perhaps they should hire and pay an actual designer.

Chris Grealy, the prize is a pair of tickets in Business class.

    Looks like economy to me.

Forget trips. To design a themed livery deemed good enough to be displayed on an A380. I wouldn’t be doing it for such a measly reward. I’d want some of my mortgage paid off for that sort of thing. I bet they don’t get many entries.

Miserable economy, it is punishment I agree Chris.
