“Any Australian working in, or retired from, a discipline involved in the support of air and space flight in Australia is eligible,” the RAeS said on its website. “The award can recognise individuals at any stage in their career.”
The winner of the Sir Lawrence Hargrave Award is traditionally announced at the opening ceremony of the Avalon Airshow, with the formal presentation taking place at the Australian International Aerospace Congress (AIAC) dinner held during the event.
The 2017 Avalon Airshow will be held between February 28 and March 5.
Sir Lawrence is best remembered for the box kites he designed in the late 1890s that paved the way for the development of the first generation of aircraft.
A memorial in his honour overlooks Stanwell Park Beach south of Sydney, where Sir Lawrence conducted a number of experiments with the box kites.
Qantas has also named one of its Airbus A380s VH-OQE the Sir Lawrence Hargrave.
The closing date for nominations is November 25 2016. More details and the application form are available of the RAeS Australian division website.
