Runway repairs at Jakarta Airport have forced Singapore Airlines (SIA) to postpone the launch of its Sydney-Jakarta-Singapore service.

The new flights were due to take off from November 23 and operate three times a week with Boeing 777-200ER equipment featuring 26 business class seats that offer direct aisle access and 245 economy class seats.

SIA said in a statement on Wednesday it had received all necessary approvals to operate the route. However, repair work on the airport runway had prompted the move to delay the start of the new service.

“SIA has been informed by the Indonesian civil aviation authorities that they are now unable to approve the flights due to runway maintenance works at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which also affect other airlines,” SIA said.

“SIA will progressively contact customers with bookings on this route and help put them on other flights. The airline apologises for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”

No new start date was offered.

Once the new service does eventually commence, SIA will have a total of 34 weekly flights between Singapore and Sydney and 74 weekly flights a week between Singapore and Jakarta.

SIA said previously alliance partner Virgin Australia would codeshare on the new route. Australia’s competition regulator recently approved the pair’s alliance until 2020.

The Sydney-Jakarta route is currently served by Qantas and Garuda Indonesia.
