There is a new presence in the skies over Western Australia, with CHC’s recent introduction of the next-generation Leonardo AW189 helicopter.
Based in Karratha, three of the Italian-built ‘super medium’ AW189s – the first in Australia – began flying in support of Woodside’s North-West Shelf operations in November.

says:Given the AW139 is the staple for most government emergency helicopters on the East Coast, the option of the AW189 would be a good choice for a second type to avoid the risk of having no air assets in the case of a fleet grounding (such as the case in Queensland recently).

says:What emergency aircraft where grounded in QLD recently?? The 3 current QG Air (EMQ) AW139s where only grounded in the first year or two of owning them due to an issue with the tail or tail rotor which grounded ALL AW139s. I do how ever wish all SAR, EMS and police choppers move to an AW139 fleet along with some AW189s. GQair are getting 2-3 new AW139 enhanced choppers for FNQ to not only standise the fleet but enhance.the capabilities such as faster cruise seeds and longer range than the current bell 412s. A couple of PC24s would do nicely as well.
