Butcher bird – One man’s passion to fly his very own Focke-Wulf Fw 190

written by australianaviation.com.au | June 10, 2018

As a youngster with an aviator father and a passion for flying, Chris Mayr made scale models of German World War 2 aircraft and dreamed of one day owning and flying one in particular – a Focke-Wulf Fw 190. And now he has.

A mainstay of the Luftwaffe throughout the war, the Fw 190, named Würger (shrike or butcher bird), is a low-wing fighter, powered by a giant BMW radial engine and able to mix it on terms equal or better with allied Mustangs and Spitfires right through to the end of the war.

I saw this aircraft the Illawarra airshow in 2018 and was floored. I didn’t know that it was more of a reproduction around an original air frame however I do see how this would be the only way – given the result of the war – of German war bird flying.

Live the dream, but tell us about it. Most of us will never achieve the targets you have already achieve but are able to at least we can read of your achievements. I really want to hear more. All the best mate, Live Long And Prosper.

The year of the airshow at Illawarra airshow was 2017 in the month of May. I was the tow pilot for the glider aerobatic display and I had the Pawnee tow plane in the same hangar where Mark had the FW 190. I also assisted Mark with some necessary brake servicing on the FW. I took some video on practice day of the FW starting up, taxiing and flying. Happy to send it to anyone interested.

Was lucky enough to have seen the Chris’s FW190 fly over head many a time during its time at the Albury airport. That is the luck of living under a flight path. At the Airport Chris was such a friendly person wanting to share his passion by walking towards after he sights you and starts you telling you about his Bird as you are on the other side of the chain wire security fence with fingers hook on as you try to get a look see of her. Sadly Chris’s FW190 now is based at Wangaratta airport which is closer for Chris to get access to which would mean more available time flying her/maintaining her… and we now her in Albury have lost that privilege of that experience of sight, sound and dreaming. Certainly a beast of an aircraft, such a different distinctive sound of its motor, shape and distinctive lowered landing gear when down, the bloody big 3 blades cutting through the air.. Sadly missed her in Albury by me, and especially my grand kids who often pushed past me to beat me to the back door just to look up her flying past my home calling out its the Focke-Wulf, its the Focke-Wulf

Chris, thanks for that privilege of the FW190 experience

  • Fascinating. Are any airshow displays planned for the FW190 in 2021-2022? Is the FW190 going to make any appearances at the 2021 RAAF centenary celebrations and if so where? Worth preserving aviation history and would be great to see a flying version Me262 sometime in future in Australia. Good luck and best wishes with your endeavours Chris, a very worthwhile pursuit.
