Once completed, officials expect the total area covered by shops, bars and restaurants to have increased by more than 80 per cent.

International passengers can also expect to see:

  • Larger emigration and immigration processing points;
  • Increased security screening capacity;
  • A greater duty-free shopping precinct;
  • A second, longer baggage belt.
Next-gen Adelaide airport facilities near completion
The launch of the new facilities is Adelaide Airport’s first major expansion since the current terminal was opened in 2005

Airport managing director Mark Young said, “We think brands like Penfolds and later Maggie Beer will make Adelaide Airport a destination both for travellers and for South Australians looking for a unique dining and food experience.

“The presence of iconic South Australian brands as well as the ultimate location of the Vickers Vimy aircraft on the ground floor of the expanded terminal will deliver a real sense of place.”

Measures permitting greater passenger capacity seem consistent with previous estimates of annual growth at Adelaide Airport, which forecast a doubling of the yearly passenger count by 2039.

This growth is expected to be spread across both international and domestic markets.

Virgin Australia looks to capitalise on the latter, with an expanded lounge slated to open in April.

The expanded terminal is also set to house airline offices currently operating out of Aviation House, directly adjacent to the main building.

Demolition of this building is set for March, ahead of the next phase of development.

    Once again the airport has opened more retail type establishments. When do such places work out that people only have a limited amount of money to spend. Adelaide Airport is just like the rest, they rely on the consumer to justify the high rents charged to the tenants. Personally, give me the lounge any day.
