Melbourne has won the Australia/Pacific category at the prestigious World Airport Awards.
Singapore’s Changi topped the overall poll for the eighth year in a row, which was decided by customers from 100 different countries across 550 airports.

The ceremony – arguably the sector’s most prestigious – was originally due to take place on 1 April in Paris, but was delayed and switched to a YouTube live stream instead. You can watch it below:
Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi said, “Last year we poured significant investment into creating a more seamless traveller journey and that ranged from installing smart security screening technology – eliminating the need for people to remove laptops from bags – to adding self-service check-in kiosks to reduce queues.”
Overall, Melbourne ranked at 20 in the global section of the survey. The top three were Changi, Tokyo Haneda and Hamad, Doha.
East Asia dominated, too, with seven of the top 10 airports for 2020 based in the region and four alone in Japan.
Edward Plaisted, CEO of consultancy Skytrax, said, “Melbourne Airport also performed well in the Staff Service award for Australia/Pacific, securing third place, and for airports serving 30 to 40 million passengers, Melbourne was in fifth position.
“For Singapore Changi Airport to be voted the World’s Best Airport title for eight consecutive years is a truly remarkable achievement and demonstrates a simply fantastic level of consistency. Singapore Changi Airport remains a very popular choice with customers and delights at nearly all points in the airport journey, and it is this attention to detail that proves so popular.”
