FlyPelican yesterday launched the only direct service between Newcastle and the Sunshine Coast.
The three-times weekly service will run for an initial three-month period over the summer, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It’s currently the only direct service from the Sunshine Coast to a non-COVID hotspot in NSW. Queensland is effectively shut to Greater Sydney after a outbreak that originated in the Northern Beaches over the Christmas period.
The service will be operated by its 19-seat Jetstream 32 turboprop aircraft, which will complete the journey in just under two hours.
FlyPelican chief executive Marty Hawley said, “Whilst this route is commencing as a 12-week service, we hope it will develop into a year round offering relatively quickly.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle Airport chief executive Dr Peter Cock said, “At the peak of travel restrictions FlyPelican was the only airline operating in and out of Newcastle Airport, and they have grown from strength to strength now offering a direct service to one of our favourite holiday destinations – the Sunny Coast.”
In October, Australian Aviation reported how FlyPelican announced it will launch twice-weekly return flights between Canberra and Port Macquarie in NSW from 1 November.
FlyPelican is a regional and charter airline based in Newcastle, operating a fleet of British Aerospace Jetstream 32s. Borders permitting, it operates regular scheduled passengers services between; Newcastle-Canberra, Newcastle-Ballina (Byron Bay), Newcastle-Dubbo, Canberra-Dubbo, Sydney-Mudgee, Sydney-Taree and Newcastle-Sydney.

says:A pity the route was not publicized here on the Sunshine Coast. First heard of when a TV news item shows the aircraft landing & disembarking 4 passengers. Hopefully more publicity will give them a better payload.
