Qantas is set to reinstate direct services from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport to Sydney from 14 February, after a nearly two-year hiatus of the route, as it ramps up its operations throughout Queensland.
The carrier will perform 12 return flights between the regional Queensland airport and NSW capital city per week, operated by regional subsidiary QantasLink, on its fleet of Dash-8 Q400 aircraft.

The route’s schedule has been dubbed “business-friendly”, with two flights per day on weekdays, and one flight each Saturday and Sunday.
Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport chairman John Wagner said the new flights will see over 1,700 seats available between Sydney and Wellcamp each week.
“Wellcamp Airport has worked closely with Qantas to recommence flights between Toowoomba and Sydney, allowing ease of travel for the Darling Downs Region and beyond,” Wagner said.
“We’re looking forward to seeing friends and family reunite in our airport and look forward to the significant economic benefits that the Sydney flight will bring to our region.”
Qantas has also announced it will extend its Brisbane-Cooma services from 1 July, bringing Queenslanders to NSW’s Snowy Mountains for the snow and ski season.
From July, Qantas will fly two weekly return flights, catering for both weekender and five-day snow holidays.
The airline will also ramp up flights on its Brisbane to Albury route, with daily return flights available from 1 January, giving access to Victoria’s resorts at Falls Creek and Hotham.
The flights to Cooma and Albury are the only direct flights from Brisbane to the snowfields, Qantas claims.
Meanwhile, the Flying Kangaroo has also extended services in Far North Queensland, again on its QantasLink Q400s.
Qantas has added five additional Cairns-Townsville services, bringing its total to 32 return flights per week, and added six additional Townsville-Mackay services, to a total of 21 return flights per week.
The carrier has also added four more Cairns-Horn Island services, bringing its total to 19 return flights per week.
“Qantas started in Queensland 101 years ago, and we’re delighted to be increasing our regional and interstate flights in the state,” said QantasLink CEO John Gissing.
“With Queensland’s border just weeks away from reopening, we know there’s huge pent-up demand for travel. The return of our Toowoomba services and the additional flights will support the recovery of the tourism sector and improve connectivity for local residents.
“In the past 18 months we have added 27 new Queensland routes, more than half of the new domestic routes on our network.”

says:Of course, the highest airport in Oz (at 4260′ AMSL) is indeed Mount Hotham in Victoria. Unfortunately, it may not quite be up to handling the weight and runway length requirements of the stretched Dash 8 Q400. It’s a long drive up from ABX!
