This year marks the centenary for the world’s second oldest independent air force. Established in 1921, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is predated only by the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF). 

Australian expertise with aircraft in a military role predates the formation of the RAAF, with Australian airmen flying for eight Australian Flying Corps Squadrons during World War I. These squadrons formed part of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).
