Train Like You Fly

Former RAAF pilot Alexander Robinson is the co-founder of Airly, an app to book business jet flights. Here, he discusses why training with new technologies can deliver an improved pilot experience

During the Christmas to New Year lull, I went down a Google rabbit hole of aviation-related interests, and downloaded a new iOS app released by Collins Aerospace called HGS Flight. In aviation, HGS (Head-up Guidance System) or Heads-Up Display present critical information and provide guidance as pilots look outside, and have been shown to significantly improve safety and performance by providing increased situational awareness, particularly during critical flight phases such as climb, descent, and approach.

Collins Aerospace continues to lead the market for military and civilian systems, and introduced the technology decades ago. A tool typically exclusive to the military, airline, or business jet pilots, many private and general aviation pilots and enthusiasts alike will be aware of HGSs despite not having used one first-hand. Collins’ iPad app brings the HGS experience, complete with Enhanced Vision and Synthetic Vision Systems, to anyone.
