Air New Zealand general manager, brand and marketing, Jeremy O’Brien said as people start to return to Aotearoa, the safety video serves as an invitation to them to “act as guardians while they’re here”.

“We want tourism to build back better than it was before and part of that is to share with our visitors a sense of kaitiaki – to encourage them to act like guardians of our country,” he said.

“Our safety videos are world renowned and through them, we have an opportunity to educate and inspire ourselves, our customers and Aotearoa on the importance of Tiaki and everything it stands for. It’s about being good hosts, and good visitors.”

“I’d like to thank Pou Tikanga and storyteller, Joe Harawira, New Zealand Māori Tourism and the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute for guiding us, right from concept to the building of the waka, and the cultural formalities we followed throughout. The collaborative effort has helped us share this story and the principles of Tiaki authentically,” he added.

Regarding the Wir NZ safety video..Speaking as a Kiwi of 40 years I must say it is whimsical but otherwise PC and condescendingly hypocrites!!
From my observations Maori are not particularly environmentally sensitive…Using non traditional Pakeha inventions to utilise “traditional fishing rights” is not cultural correct

For your information, Maori are currently navigating traditional canoes around the world via the stars and ancient navigational methods (when you can not see the stars) as we speak. Your perspective is nonsensical, baseless, and essentially lacks any form of critical thinking. I am here to correct you Malcolm Smith. You are absolutely no authority, nor can you represent is culturally correct or traditional opinion for Maori.

40 years Kiwi – Zero years Maori.

Air NZ Ad far too long and trying to be too clever. Would have fallen asleep if I was on that flight! From a safety perspective a total backfire!

  • At the risk of being labelled old fashioned, I dont believe you should mix the important safety video, with a travel and cultural video, great airline as AIR NZ is and absolutely fabulous country, as NZ is.
Having just flown very recently, its always sad to see so many of the passengers completely ignoring the cabin crew safety demo., too busy on their device, reading or chatting away, rudely so.
Safety videos, or the cabin crew briefing, just needs to be, just that, main points thoroughly explained and ”hammered” home. This, video charming as it is, is so etheral it will take you away into the land of fantasy, when you should be listening to important safety facts.
Sorry AIR NZ, you have diluted the importance of the safety video here.
Others will think differently of course.
