Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet has officially begun services connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Perth and Adelaide.

Flight VJ89 from Ho Chi Minh City touched down in Perth just before 2:30pm on Tuesday aboard the A321neo VN-A646 before continuing to Adelaide at 3:51pm, arriving just before 9:30pm local time. The carrier will operate the return service five times per week.

Vietjet initially announced two services per week between Ho Chi Minh City and Perth, but increased the frequency and added Adelaide last month ahead of the launch. It is the first time there has been a direct connection from either city to Vietnam.

“Vietjet provides affordable air travel with a strong focus on customer service, and we are delighted to welcome the airline to Perth Airport and look forward to building on the relationship to deliver a great new holiday destination in Vietnam for Western Australians,” said Perth Airport chief operating officer Scott Woodward.

“It is a great sign for Western Australia to see airlines show keen interest in delivering new air services to Perth Airport and opening up non-stop access to new international destinations.”

Vietnam is the 12th largest export market for South Australia, having grown 32 per cent in the 12 months to September 2023. SA Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said Vietjet’s entry into Adelaide opens up significant opportunities for the state.

“Greater access to key tourism and trade markets in Asia is hugely valuable, with tourism in the Asian region currently worth $602 million to our state and exports to Vietnam now worth almost half a billion dollars a year,” she said.

“The South Australian Tourism Commission and Adelaide Airport have been working hard behind the scenes to secure more airlines and recover international aviation, and I am incredibly pleased that today’s milestone means more flights and more opportunities for our state.”

The launch of the Perth and Adelaide route means Vietjet now flies into all five mainland states, with the airline already serving Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

No other direct services currently link WA to Vietnam, though several airlines, including Vietjet, Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar and Bamboo Airways, fly from the east coast to Ho Chi Minh City and/or Hanoi. Vietnam Airlines will fly non-stop from Perth to Ho Chi Minh City starting in December.

Vietjet wrapped up its rollout on Australia’s eastern seaboard in June with its first flight to Brisbane.
