A woman has been airlifted to hospital after the plane her husband was flying “somersaulted” and crashed in a backyard on the Sunshine Coast.
The pilot is believed to have lost control of the GlaStar light aircraft, registered VH-BAQ, when a sudden gust of wind hit as he came in to land on a grass airstrip at Cootharaba on Sunday.

He escaped with minor cuts, while his wife aged in her 50s was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition for suspected neck, chest and abdominal injuries.
#Cootharaba – Paramedics have assessed two stable patients after a light plane crash at Cootharaba at 9.10am. One patient has been transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital by helicopter while the other patient has declined transport.

“The light plane was coming into land on a private airstrip and ended up somersaulting and crashing into a tree,” said RACQ LifeFlight Rescue aircrew officer Scott Reeman.
“It clipped a palm tree in a house yard while it was airborne and then cartwheeled end-to-end across the yard and clipped another tree.”
This was the third aircraft-related rescue mission RACQ LifeFlight attended over a few days, following the dramatic sea rescue of two men from a Cessna 421C that ditched off Mooloolaba on Friday and the airlifting of a man who crashed his paraglider on a Gympie beach later that evening.
