Newcastle Airport’s terminal upgrade has been delayed by several months and is now slated to open in early 2025.

The multi-million-dollar upgrades originally planned for completion this year, which will overhaul the international terminal including passenger and border processing facilities to better support overseas flights, have been set back due in part to “supply chain issues”, airport management said in a statement just before the new year.

“Despite this adjustment in timing, we remain confident in the profoundly positive impact this expansion will have on our region,” the statement read.

“Importantly, our focus extends beyond the terminal. We are currently in the midst of a $250M (approx.) program of works taking place across the entire Newcastle Airport site.

“Car parking upgrades have already been successfully completed, while supporting infrastructure upgrades and roadworks are in progress, including the RAAF airfield works.”

Customers have been reassured the project, partially funded by a $55 million investment from the federal government, is “well underway and steadily progressing”.

“We know the people of our region are excited about the ease and convenience of flying internationally from Newcastle Airport. Conversations with airlines remain positive and proactive, with significant interest in our expansion plans,” the statement read.

“We are enthusiastic about what the future holds and we thank you for your continued support as we work to enhance and deliver the airport the region deserves.”

The airport secured the federal grant funding ahead of the 2022 election, with both major parties pledging the terminal upgrade to follow on from the airport’s $66 million runway upgrade.

According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, the upgrades at Newcastle Airport will unlock “significant economic benefits” for local and regional tourism and trade.

“Making Newcastle Airport an international gateway will unlock greater opportunities for local tourism while better connecting residents to the world,” she said last year.

“The project will also support significant employment and economic stimulus during and after construction, providing even more of a boost for the Hunter.”

The works coincide with upgrades by the RAAF, which owns the airstrip at the adjoining Williamtown base, meaning if the airport had not secured the money in time it would have had to wait until the next scheduled upgrades in approximately 2040.

Newcastle Airport also signed a $240 million financing deal with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in April last year, which will fund capital projects not covered by the grants, such as at its Astra Aerolab defence and aerospace precinct.
