Brisbane Airport is set to begin construction on a $90 million extension to its domestic terminal carpark as part of its $5 billion transformation program.
The extension, expected to commence shortly and complete by mid-2025, will add 1,700 long-term parking spaces to the current P2 carpark, removing the existing 30-minute parking area and spaces for vehicles over 2.4 metres in height. Solar panels will also be added to the carpark’s roof.

The overheight spaces will close from 25 March, forcing vehicles higher than 2.4 metres to use the open-air Airpark carparks, while from 11 March, visitors will be given 30 minutes of free parking at the P1 carpark’s ParkShort spaces to replace the 30-minute spaces at P2.
“Since COVID we have seen an increased share of people wanting to drive to the airport. We continue to see the demand for parking grow as Brisbane’s population expands and we’re investing now to cater for current and future passenger needs,” said Martin Ryan, executive general manager commercial, Brisbane Airport.
“We too are sorry to see the dedicated overheight area go which is currently used by around a dozen vehicles at any one time, but the trade-off is the creation of 1,700 urgently needed parking spaces.”
Brisbane last year embarked on a major transformation program, with the domestic terminal to receive new security screening systems, a mezzanine level, a new baggage hall, and self-check-in upgrades among other changes.
Construction at the domestic terminal began in November and is expected to take approximately three years.
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said at the time that the airport is investing now to get ahead of population growth and improve connectivity and sustainability.
“The Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal is the most connected domestic terminal in Australia with services to 61 destinations, so it is a very important transport hub. Half of those destinations are in Queensland,” he said.
“In the past year, 20 million passengers travelled through Brisbane Airport, and we expect that to grow by 10 million passengers in the coming decade as Queensland’s population expands and our terminals need to be ready.
“More than 20,000 people come to work at Brisbane Airport every day and we forecast that to grow to 30,000 by the time the flame is lit at the Opening Ceremony for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Future projects will include an overhaul of the international terminal, continued planning for a new Terminal 3 precinct, aircraft parking and apron expansions, runway resurfacing, and a new aeromedical facility so medical repatriation and emergency services can be centralised at the airport.
