Jetstar is set to launch a new non-stop service from Brisbane to Bangkok at the end of the year.

Commencing 13 December, the route will operate three times per week using Jetstar’s 787-8 Dreamliner fleet and is tipped to add 190,000 inbound seats to Queensland over three years. It will be the only non-stop service between the two cities, roughly halving travel time to eight hours.

Jetstar services will depart Brisbane at 2.20pm on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and return at 8.25am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“This route has been the most frequently requested in comments on Brisbane Airport’s social media accounts over the past two years,” said Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff.

“A direct flight makes it easier for families and friends to connect and provides greater opportunities for Queensland exporters with up to 15 tonnes of freight capacity on every service.

“Queenslanders have embraced the great value Jetstar offers, propelling it from Brisbane Airport’s seventh biggest international carrier to number two.”

Jetstar’s flights will be the first time Brisbane has seen a non-stop Bangkok connection since COVID-19 forced the end of a Thai Airways service in March 2020. Jetstar CEO Steph Tully said she expects the route to be in high demand.

“This is our 20th Brisbane route in what is Jetstar’s 20th year of flying, and we’re focused on delivering for our customers with more new routes and new aircraft on the way,” she said.

“We would like to thank the Queensland government and Brisbane Airport for their ongoing support of low-fares travel.”

According to Queensland Tourism Minister Michael Healy, this is the 32nd route secured by the state government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund since 2022.

“Compared to pre-COVID figures, we have recently seen record numbers of visitors from Thailand to Queensland, so it was vital for us to open up a direct route to Bangkok,” he said.

“Being a low-cost carrier, Jetstar will help make travel to Brisbane more affordable for international students and passengers travelling from across Asia, the UK, and Europe, using Bangkok as a hub.

“Air freight from Brisbane to Thailand hit a record $46.5 million last year so the return flights will be terrific for our meat, fish, fruit and vegetable exporters.”

Jetstar last year announced a massive expansion of its international services from Brisbane, including new direct routes to Seoul and Osaka which commenced earlier this year.
