Rex’s administrator is looking to keep the airline’s Rex Flyer loyalty scheme for regional operations.
In an email to Rex Flyer members seen by Australian Aviation, administrator Sam Freeman said tier benefits will continue to be honoured, and customers will still be able to earn points – including tier bonus points – during the period of the voluntary administration.

“These points will be redeemable only in the event of a successful restructure of Rex that specifically seeks to maintain these points, and while we can’t guarantee the outcome of this process, it is our current expectation that such a restructure is the likely way forward for Rex,” Freeman said.
“While we recognise you likely want more certainty around how and when you can use the points you’ve accrued, I want you to know that your patience and understanding while Rex undergoes this process, is directly helping to set the airline up for future success.
“We are focused on getting Rex through administration and securing a future for the airline and will continue to update you as the administration progresses.”
Rex launched Rex Flyer in October last year to compete with Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer. Passengers could earn up to seven points for every dollar spent, with a last-minute “ultimate” flight from Melbourne to Sydney costing 7,400 points.
“The anytime redemption option allows members to redeem at last-seat-available basis and provides the highest flexibility of all frequent flyer programs available in Australia,” Rex said at the time.
“Three tier status levels – sapphire, emerald, and diamond – will be accorded to members who have accumulated the relevant number of status points.
“A unique component of the Rex Flyer program will see all unsold seats available at the cheapest reward redemption rate (Ultimate) progressively from 48 hours before a scheduled departure.”
The scheme was the third entrant into what is often a cutthroat frequent flyer market, with Velocity and Qantas Frequent Flyer frequently attempting to outdo each other and poach members.
Virgin Australia last year attempted to entice Qantas Frequent Flyer members with a trial status-matching offer for those who have achieved gold status or above in “other Australian airline loyalty programs”.
Virgin and Qantas’ respective loyalty programs have been at war for years, with Virgin in 2022 launching a similar “Switch-a-Roo” scheme to lure the Flying Kangaroo’s frequent flyer customers over to Velocity.
