Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said the new services will inject almost 200,000 low-fares seats between them into the Sydney and Gold Coast trans-Tasman markets.

“This will be the first time Jetstar has ever flown to and from Hamilton and will unlock more than 75,000 new low fares seats between Sydney and New Zealand’s North Island each year,” she said.

“The new service will provide cheaper and more convenient access from east-coast Australia to holiday hot spots like Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty, as well as bring thousands of tourists to Sydney, injecting millions of dollars into the New South Wales tourism economy.

“Tourism is a key industry on the Gold Coast and the new agreement with Queensland Airports will support the growth of inbound tourism and provide a big boost to local operators.

“It’s also great news for customers, with the new routes unlocking more than 115,000 new low fares seats a year between the Gold Coast and Hamilton and Dunedin, while helping to connect the city’s large population of Kiwi ex-pats to their home country.”

Both Gold Coast Airport and Sydney Airport are touting the new services as a massive boost for their trans-Tasman connections, with Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans saying it will connect the Gold Coast to Dunedin for the first time and reconnect the city to Hamilton, which was its first-ever New Zealand destination.

“New Zealand is Australia’s largest international visitor market, so it makes sense for us to increase our Trans-Tasman connectivity. We’re proud that we’ll be Australia’s most connected airport to New Zealand,” she said.

Greg Botham, Sydney Airport’s group executive for aviation growth and group strategy, said the new Hamilton service “locks Sydney in as the Australian gateway to New Zealand”.

“With more than two-million annual passengers between Sydney and NZ it’s second only to the USA as our largest international destination,” he said.

“Passengers connecting from other international services and Australian cities will now have more choice than ever before for their onward journey across the ditch.”

Jetstar earlier this year announced it was stationing an eighth A320-200 in New Zealand from December as part of a major expansion in the country, its largest in 10 years.
