Bob Walker is the engineering director of Qantas. An aeronautical engineering graduate of the University of Sydney, he joined Qantas in 1949 as a performance and structures engineer. Since then he has held various senior positions within the airline’s engineering and maintenance division. He was the technical development manager during the Boeing 747 acquisition programme and before that, technical representative in Europe during Qantas’ Concorde studies and HS 125 purchases. He has been involved in every major aircraft acquisition programme since Qantas purchased its Super Constellations in the early 1950s.
With a 1980/81 fuel bill of some $300 million, Qantas is making a determined effort to maximise fuel efficiency. Bob Walker, engineering director of Qantas, outlines the decision, to purchase Rolls Royce engines based on a lengthy and thorough evaluation programme.
