Opinion: Is it time for ‘TAA 2.0’?
Jake Nelson examines the argument for the federal government to take a more direct hand in the airline industry – and maybe even run an airline of its own again.
Perhaps it is time for me to stop writing opinion pieces about how well airlines are doing. Not one issue of Australian Aviation magazine has passed since the collapse of Bonza, and Rex – another upstart looking to muscle into the domestic jet market – has also been forced into voluntary administration. This was after, back in issue #391, I said its ultimately quixotic tilt at capital city flights had “been an important wake-up call for the Qantas–Virgin duopoly”.
“If Rex can pull this off, it has the potential to become a true third force in Australian skies and break the stranglehold Qantas and Virgin have held virtually unchallenged for well over a decade,” I said.

says:Seems a bit hypocritical given the abject refusal of the government of the day to assist in the rescue of Virgin Australia, which then resulted in a significant loss of competition in both the domestic and international markets.
Particularly given the funds committed to Rex during Covid which were, allegedly, used to support the jet startup.
I would prefer to see the federal government re acquire the airports previously owned and operated by the Federal Airports Corporation and use the funds to support all Australian operators not just the ones that are well connected politically.
