The seasonal service is the second American Airlines route currently operating into Australia alongside Sydney to Los Angeles and will start at five flights per week before ramping up to daily services from December to the end of March.
“The excitement we saw when we first announced our new Brisbane flight back at the start of the year was overwhelming, so to have finally landed in the Sunshine State from Dallas-Fort Worth is a momentous occasion for American,” said American Airlines’ vice president of international operations, José Freig.
“With this new route, our customers in Brisbane will have access to our largest hub, from where they can connect to explore unexplored and much-loved destinations around the world.”
The service was secured through Queensland’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF). Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) is also supporting the flights, with CEO Patricia O’Callaghan highlighting how Texas is the second-most populous state in the US and American Airlines is the world’s largest carrier by passenger volume.
“TEQ has been marketing Queensland in partnership with American Airlines (AA) in recent months to build awareness of this air access and today is a big celebration to welcome the first eager AA passengers direct here to Brisbane,” O’Callaghan said.
“With the United States being Queensland’s second biggest international visitor market and growing rapidly – up 53 per cent in the last financial year – we are looking forward to this flight route being a huge boost to Queensland’s visitor economy.”
American is a codeshare partner with Qantas, which operates its own non-stop flights from Brisbane to LAX, as well as from Sydney and Melbourne to DFW and LAX and Sydney to San Francisco, plus its long-haul direct service from Sydney to New York (JFK) via Auckland.
Currently, the only other American carrier to fly between Brisbane and the US is Virgin codeshare partner United, which operates a regular service to San Francisco, though Air Canada flies non-stop from Brisbane to Vancouver.
A seasonal Delta service to Los Angeles will commence on 6 December.
