Australia wins again at international drone races

It was a hat trick that put the hosts to shame. In September, the Australian Army Drone Racing Team took top honours for the third year in a row at the UK’s Military International Drone Racing Tournament. In a series of dizzying dips, dives, twists and turns, the group raced their zippy little devices through a complicated obstacle course in first-person view, beating 17 other nations to claim the prize. The three-day tournament tasks military personnel with flying first-person view drones through a designated course. This year, competitors included Singapore, Jordan, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and the UK, which Australia beat in a nail-biting final series.

Team captain, Private Alex Brown, described the event as an incredible opportunity to compete in such a technologically advanced sport. “To compete against the best military drone racing teams in the world is a huge thrill,” Private Brown said. Joining the experienced drone racers on the team were the fastest cadet racers, who, despite only starting to fly drones at the start of 2024, made their mark, staying in the contest until the finals. Cadet Sergeant Zachary Melvaine finished in the top four Australians and enjoyed every moment of the trip. “We have been able to meet other cadets from local units in London and share our passion and interest in drone racing and cadets,” he said.
