Singapore Airlines (SIA) is adjusting flight times on its Darwin–Singapore service, adding late-night departures three days a week.

Starting in the upcoming northern summer season, commencing 30 March, the SQ254 service on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays will depart Darwin at 1:55am, arriving in Singapore at 5:10am local time, which the airline says will enable better connectivity.

Passengers from Darwin will see layover times in Singapore dramatically decreased, some by more than 10 hours, removing the need to overnight at Changi Airport on a number of routes.

“This new morning arrival into Singapore will increase connection options and reduce transit times for key destinations from DRW including Jakarta, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and Kathmandu,” the carrier said.

“Additionally, this will allow connectivity to a greater number of European flight routes, including London Heathrow, Paris, and Frankfurt.

“With two departure options for these destinations across the week, customers can enjoy their choice of flight, with efficient connections for their onward journeys to Europe.”

Singapore Airlines has operated the 737 MAX 8 to Darwin since June 2022 and is currently the only carrier to fly Darwin-Singapore, though other airlines including Tiger, SilkAir and Jetstar Asia have operated the route in the past.

QantasLink is set to launch a Darwin–Singapore service next March using its A220-300 fleet – a route that was initially slated to begin in December using wet-leased Alliance E190s.

“The direct service is not just great news for Territorians wanting to visit Singapore, but also for those travelling to London, Europe and across Southeast Asia, with connections to popular destinations like Phuket and Kuala Lumpur with our partner airlines, saving hours of travel time,” Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said in January.

“This new route also allows us to restore the link to the UK which was established when international borders first reopened after the pandemic and we temporarily re-routed our London flight via Darwin with the support of the Northern Territory Government and Darwin Airport.

“This new service makes it much easier for Qantas customers from the UK, Europe and across Asia to incorporate Darwin into their Australian itinerary and experience everything the Territory has to offer.”
